What educators are saying

My students really liked this lesson! We started doing weekly TED Talks with discussions after watching this one.
Used this with our 8th graders (the oldest in our school) to get a bit more whole school community leadership going. They liked it almost as much as all the teachers :)

Description

A Viewing Guide to get your class thinking about the importance of LEADERSHIP!

Leadership is something that we wish our students had, and that we ask them to demonstrate, without ever really explaining what that means (or how to do it). While there are many different aspects of leadership, communication (and how to convey your vision in a way that inspires others to come along with you) is fundamental piece of that puzzle.

In his TED Talk, How Great Leaders Inspire Action, Simon Sinek discusses the concept of the "golden circle," which explains why some leaders and organizations are able to inspire while others are not. According to Sinek, successful leaders and organizations think, act, and communicate from the inside out, starting with why they do what they do, followed by how they do it, and ending with what they do. In contrast, most people and organizations communicate from the outside in, starting with what they do, followed by how they do it, and ending with why they do it. Sinek argues that this difference in communication style is what separates inspiring leaders and organizations from the rest. He also discusses the importance of appealing to people's beliefs and values in order to inspire them to take action.

This resource includes digital or printable handouts including:

  1. Background sheet on Simon Sinek (including the link to the talk)
  2. Pre-Viewing Question sheet to gauge your students current understanding of leadership and what qualities make a good leader.
  3. During Viewing Question sheet to complete as you watch the talk.
  4. Two Options for After Viewing Question Sheets (do one or both!) with follow up research tasks, and paragraph responses, designed to solidify and apply what your class has learned.

Use any one of the sheets individually or in combination with the others!

All handouts are in Word format and are 100% editable.

Happy teaching!
