What educators are saying

Very thorough and so many resources! It was nice to be able to pick and choose activities to use with my unit.
This was a great resource that helped my students with their public speaking skills in a relevant way

Description

Empower your students to engage, inspire and connect with an audience through explicitly teaching public speaking skills! Ready-to-go printables to scaffold the planning and delivery of any TED Talk! TED Talk viewing activities, public speaking tips, planning templates, assessment and more!

In a world where people’s ideas can be easily shared through various forms of social media, effective communication is crucial. It is becoming increasingly difficult to ‘stand out’ and have your ideas heard when anyone can publish a thought online with a simple ‘click’ of a button. For this reason, it is critical that we empower our youth with skills to inspire, engage and persuade an audience so they have the ability to communicate their ideas with confidence and conviction.

There is no doubt that public speaking is a difficult thing to do. When asked what people’s greatest fears are, public speaking consistently ranks as one of the highest! Equipping students with skills in public speaking is equal to instilling in them the power to take action and make positive changes in our world!

As someone who loves watching TED talks (and has worked for many years to overcome my own fear of public speaking!), I created this resource to support teachers in the process of scaffolding students through the planning and delivery of their own TED-style presentation. With over a billion views worldwide, TED talks have become the gold standard for public speaking. After reading “Talk Like TED” written by Carmine Gallo, I was inspired to use the strategies outlined in the book to create a resource that is accessible for students in middle and high school. The tools in this resource will equip your students with the skills and strategies for delivering a presentation that is powerful, persuasive and memorable.

I strongly believe that if we focus on fostering students’ ability to confidently share their hopes, dreams, ideas and visions, we are paving the way for a generation who will have the passion and competency to create movements that positively impact our future!

This resource is divided into sections and each section includes ready-to-print information sheets, activities and templates:

• TED Talk Suggestions
• Introductory Activities
• Step 1: Find Your Passion
• Step 2: Connect Through Storytelling
• Step 3: Teach the Audience Something New
• Step 4: The Rule of Three
• Step 5: Tips for a TED Worthy Speech
• Planning Templates
• Presentation Tips
• Assessment and Reflection
