What educators are saying

Loved that it included both an activity and a graphic organizer. I used the graphic organizer in the INB and then followed up with the activity to offer students additional practice
The graphic organizer really helped my students understand how to write the equations to go with the word problems. This was really helpful - we used it as a review towards the end of the unit to prepare for the test, and the students made a lot of progress using this resource.

Learning Objective

Students will solve real world systems of equations problems algebraically

Description

This activity has students solve real-world problems by writing systems of linear equations and solving them using a graphic organizer. There are also optional images of items from the word problems for checking answers.

This activity consists of 8 word problems that can be solved by writing systems of equations in standard form. One equation from each system will be in the form x + y = a number, so students will easily be able to solve for a variable.

The included graphic organizer is a great way for students to work through each step of solving problems using systems of equations and organize their work.

The problems images are from the problems they solve. For example, there is a problem about how many gummy bears are in a bag, so if the answer is 7, they will find the printed 7 gummy bear pictures. Students can check their answer and deepen their understanding of systems of equations by seeing and counting the actual items they just solved for (or at least the images of them).

This activity is great to use in stations or centers! Add more engagement by putting the answer images in candy bags, envelopes, piggy banks, etc. for students to open when they've completed a problem.

An answer key is included. I hope you love it and I hope your students learn it!

For use with standard 8.EE.C.8.C: Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables.

Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to two linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair.
Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables.
