Description

Updated: May, 2020. Just over 200 teachers have purchased this "Syria" product.

There are two power points in this "package." One is more comprehensive and includes 110 slides, whereas the other one is more concise and includes 55 slides.

One way to deal with this, especially if you are new to the Syrian topic, would be to start with the more concise power point, and next year, when you teach it again, you use the more comprehensive Ppt. Or, you can consider the 110 slide Ppt to be background info for you, and you use the 55 slide PPt with the students.

This power point covers essential background information needed to understand the conflict in Syria which leads to the emergence of ISIS. It covers Syrian history up until the present. I have another power point covering the emergence of ISIS, which works well in conjunction with this power point.

This power point will continuously involve the students in analyzing many maps, graphs and editorial cartoons.

There will be significant parts of this power point which will help you, the teacher, understand this conflict better. There will be some parts you'll have to research on your own a bit further, and there will be some of the topics that you will choose to delete.

A second file includes a 4 sided guided note sheet which corresponds with the power point.

TOPICS WHICH ARE COVERED IN THE POWER POINT:

Basic info/stats/geography about Syria

Shia vs Sunni

The Alawites

The al- Assad family dictatorship

Post – independence Syrian history

The conflict since the 2011 Arab Spring protests

Chemical Weapons in Syria

The Syrian Opposition, including ISIS and Al-Qaeda

The UN

Russian interests

The Refugee Crisis

The current territorial control map

Chemical Weapons of April 2017, and US attack on Syria base.

One way of dealing with this info is to divide the class into Assad supporters and detractors and then to debate Assad policies as you go thru the material and, yes, there is info in the power point which can be used for Assad supporters. I have included a quiz as a separate file.

I estimate that it would take you 2 - 3 hours to go through the power point, depending on how much you involve the students in discussion and/or role play.

Other products in my store which connect to the Syrian topic: Iraq, Iran, ISIS, Arab Spring - Egypt, Arab-Israeli Conflict, Islam, the Syrian migrant crisis and others.

You'll find these in my store on the Teachers pay Teachers web site. Just input 21st Century Global Studies in the search bar.

One way of dealing with this Syrian information would be to use my TpT Model United Nations International Court of Justice (ICJ) simulation on Syria product (only $2.50). That product will show you how you could run an ICJ case where your students act as judges in assessing whether the actions of the government of Syria are indeed genocide. Your students would learn about both the ICJ and the International Criminal Court. Finally, check out my free Social Studies power point suggestions, where I use part of my Syrian power point to illustrate my P pt suggestions.

I am an award winning Global Studies teacher. (See my TpT profile).
