SumoFun 101
Description
The nine lessons of SumoFun 101 will teach students a basic understanding of the often misunderstood sport of Sumo Wrestling, from the rituals and tradition of its Japanese origin that can be traced to over 2500 years ago, to modern day tournaments that make Sumo a truly worldwide sport!
By learning what a typical day is like for a sumo wrestler, how to create a unique wrestling name, basic rules of the sport, and all aspects of a Sumo Basho (or tournament), students will acquire a greater understanding of certain aspects of the fascinating Japanese culture.
Each of the 9 lessons comes with an assignment. Apart from the lesson assignments, there are 2 crossword puzzles that are provided – one for after the first 4 lessons, and the other for after lessons 5-9 – to help students learn the various terminology that is presented throughout. Finally, a term project is provided to help students understand the overall program, by having them fictitiously attend a Sumo Basho and report on the various things that they see and encounter. A review of each of the 9 lessons will be required to help them complete the term project (students are given chapter, page, and paragraph numbers to help them find the information that they’ll need to provide).
Answer keys are provided for all 9 lesson assignments, for the 2 crossword puzzles, and for the term project.
