This seasonal joke book is a fun little gift to send home with students at the end of the year. It includes 6 kid-friendly jokes and is written at a text level most appropriate for children exiting first or second grade.

Why jokes?

As a genre, jokes deserve a spot in our literacy instruction because they can lead to powerful outcomes for beginning readers. The delivery of a good joke relies on expression, intonation, and a sense of timing, which are all hallmarks of fluency.

Also, because jokes usually include an element of word play or figurative language, jokes can have a positive impact on vocabulary development.

Each page has a blank box, inviting children to illustrate their own book with their unique ideas. The final page (or back cover) is interactive in design, prompting children to brainstorm, write, and illustrate their own summer joke.
