Description

Engage your students on the last days of school with this fun 8th-grade math activity. Capture the excitement of summer with this no-prep critical thinking camping-themed digital escape room. Great to use in Summer School or as test prep!

Students will review many common core math standards as they persevere to solve 22 math problems included in the clues. (Download the PDF preview to see the specific questions included.)

EASY TO USE! To play, just save a copy of the Google Slides and assign through Google Classroom with just a few clicks! Share as "material" or email a link to students. No prep is necessary! Students will view the slideshow in present mode and record answers on their printed answer sheets. An Early Finisher Activity is provided and can be printed on the back of the answer sheet.

Mystery: Which hazard do you need to watch out for when you camp?

14 Google Slides walk students through the mystery. First, students solve 22 math problems within 5 clues. They interpret ciphers to find 5 pieces of information. Then, students read through the "survival guide" to use their clues and eliminate natural threats. In the end, students are left with only one possibility.

Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions. For example, 3² × (3⁻⁵) = (3⁻³) = 1/3³ = 1/27.
Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the form 𝘹² = 𝘱 and 𝘹³ = 𝘱, where 𝘱 is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares and cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that √2 is irrational.
Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.
Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
