Description
Practice subtraction within 20 and help your students to develop subtraction fact fluency with this engaging math center that can be used all year long! Addition and Subtraction Fact Fluency is an important math standard in first grade. It is important to provide students with exposure to math facts every day!
You can find the Addition Fact Fluency Center for free here!
One math center tub that my students visit each week during our guided math stations is our Fact Fluency Center!
In the tub I include:
-Flash Card Rings
-Laminated Fact Races
-Sand Timers
-Dry Erase Markers and Erasers
Students can quiz their math partner using the flash cards and use 1 minute sand timers to see how many facts they can complete on the fact race!
In my first grade classroom, I like to implement math center routines. These are math center activities that stay the same from week to week!
One of our favorite routines is our fact fluency center! I teach students the how to do the activity once and then I don’t have to spend time explaining it week to week! They are able to work at the center independently and it saves me tons of time planning for our weekly math centers!
I love using these materials over traditional ”timed tests” because it’s so much less pressure and more fun for students!
I always talk to my students about how our goal is just to do a little better each time. My kids absolutely love trying to beat their best score and finish more problems before time runs out. I also make this a fast finisher activity during other parts of the school day because students love visiting the center so much!

How to Prep: (It takes a little bit of prep in the beginning, but once it's done it can be used all year long!)
1. Print the Fact Races and Flash Cards
I like to color code my flash cards and fact races so that students can easily tell which is which. So for example my -2 flashcards and my -2 Fact Races are both blue.
2. Laminate the flash cards. Cut them out and hole punch to put the flash cards on binder rings. Make sure to mix them up! Before laminating, I like to write the answer on the back of the card so students can check to see if they are correct! (This is optional!)
3. Laminate the fact races so students can use dry erase marker to complete them. There are two fact races on each page. I like to cut them apart and keep both in the tub so that partners can work on the same fact race if they would like!
4. In my tubs I include flash card rings, fact races, dry erase markers, and sand timers.
Tracking:
I don’t use my Fact Fluency center as assessment for fact fluency- just practice! So I don’t track and monitor which facts students are working on when they visit the center. I encourage them to start with the -0 Fact Races and work their way through the different facts, but ultimately it is their choice! As long as they are working on math facts, I am happy!
At home practice:
If students need some extra practice with fact fluency, I sometimes will send an extra page of flash cards home. They can cut on the cards and work on them.
I hope your students love this math center as much as mine do!
