Description

Substitute or Everyday Literature Writing Activities contains six different one-page writing assignments that can be paired with ANY story, drama, or novel. Now includes a digital version! For no-prep sub plans, just choose a short story or a novel chapter and have students complete one of the writing assignments. Each is designed with a graphic organizer to keep students engaged, on topic, and consulting the text for details.


The DIGITAL version offers colorful, nicely-designed slides that allow students to type their responses into text boxes. 

With both the print and digital versions, you'll be equipped for teaching in all circumstances. You'll also be ready to differentiate to meet all students' needs.

The topics included in this resource and the standards-based skills for each are:


1. A CHARACTER CHANGES – The student must explain, after finding and analyzing text-based details, how a character changes over the course of the text. (W.2)


2. AN IMPORTANT CONFLICT – The student must use text-based details to describe a conflict and then convey ways in which the conflict is resolved. (W.2)


3. CHARACTER’S JOURNAL ENTRY – The student assumes a character’s first-person point of view to write a narrative page, developing ideas to convey the character’s experiences. (W.3)


4. EXTEND THE STORY – The student writes an additional narrative page of the story to extend the ending, using a format similar to the author’s. (W.3)


5. NEWSPAPER ARTICLE – The student examines an important event from the text and must use text-based details to convey key information about the event in a news article. (W.2)


6. LETTER OF ADVICE – The student examines a character’s actions or decisions and must analyze these factors and then give the character specific advice. (W.2)

Two attractive WRITING PAGES for the student writing are included in the download for each assignment with the topic neatly displayed. A wide-ruled and a thin-ruled format are provided so that you can differentiate if you have struggling students that would meet success with fewer lines on their page, or students who need to be challenged with more.


An easy-to-use GRADING CHECKLIST is provided where the teacher highlights a student’s strengths and weaknesses through a bank of writing comments and then provides a holistic grade. Also includes TEACHING GUIDELINES.
