Substitute lesson plans for poetry will help student hone their creative writing skills, problem solving skills, writing fluency, imagery, description and knowledge of test assessment poetry terms.

    Lesson 1: Pantoum Poetry

Pantoum poetry writing can be fun! To write a pantoum poem, students need to follow a specific format of repetition. Pantoums may be free verse or rhymed and examples of both types are included. Brainstorming, vocabulary development, poetic terms, description and imagery will help prepare students for ELA test assessment. Youtube videos of pantoums and poetry terms are included.

Students will have the option to share the poem written during Author’s Chair near the end of the period.

Lesson 2: Bill Durham Credo Poem

Narrative poetry writing can be fun! To write a Bill Durham Credo Poem, students need to express what they believe following a poetic format. Brainstorming, vocabulary development, poetic terms, description and imagery will help prepare students for ELA test assessment.

    This lesson contains:

    Google Slides

    Powerpoint slides in pings

Writing directions in Word docx and PDF

Exit pass in Word docx and PDF

Poetry rubric to assess writing in Word docx and PDF

Students may opt to share their credo poems during Author's Chair the last ten minutes of the class.

    Lesson 3: Telephone Number Poetry

Telephone Number Poetry is created by writing a telephone number vertically down a page. It can be an actual telephone number, or one made up for the poetry assignment. Students then write poetry to match the line number. The syllables of the words in each line must be the same as the telephone number. Students count the syllables and revise the poem until all numbers match.

Students may choose to share their poems during Author’s Chair the last ten minutes of the period.

Great activity to create before Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, or Mother/Father Day. Provides a no prep lesson for a substitute.

An exit pass is included at the end of the powerpoint.

    Google Slides
