Student Self-Assessment of Work Habits (Strengths & Weaknesses) for Report Cards

Studies show that when students pause and evaluate themselves, their evaluation is more meaningful than those evaluations performed by teachers. Students take ownership over their own progress. Moreover, people are more likely to achieve their goals when they write them down.

• One-page self-evaluation tool (which can be used well for students to send home to parents).

I have been using this student self-evaluation for several years, no matter what grade level I teach, and no mater what course/subject area. This was originally a two-age Word (.docx) file and totally editable, though it is about work habits (not subject content) so shouldn't require any adapting, unless you have more specific skill areas you want your students to self-evaluate on. In this way, this is an easy, but effective, self-evaluation tool that is great for both students, teachers, and parents alike. I have added an additional page of a different type of self-assessment, to offer you an option in students' self-assessment (and is designed a bit more to be taken home to show parents, whereas the other I use more for in-school student-teacher conferences and then for student-teacher-parent conferences).

My process:

1. I hand this self-evaluation to students before Interim or Final Report Cards. I explain its purpose. Students fill it out in class. (From start to finish usually takes between 40-50 minutes.)
2. I take them in, use a highlighter to make my teacher-evaluation.
3. Then I conference with each student about what they wrote and any discrepancies I have with my evaluation of them.
4. I send students home with their student-and-teacher filled out evaluation, or I keep them with me for discussion at Parent-Teacher Interviews. Either way, it is an invaluable tool to start a discussion about student learning, student-strength, and areas of potential growth and development.
