Description

This product is aligned with the Ontario Curriculum Grade 1 Science strand;

LES MATÉRIAUX, LES OBJETS ET LES STRUCTURES AU QUOTIDIEN*

• Students will distinguish between objects (including structures) and materials found in nature and those made by humans.

• Interactive notebook pages; students are asked to sort objects into categories (natural or made by humans). Add this activity to a science notebook or use as a stand-alone activity.

• Use the pages that are already organized to stimulate class discussion and add them to science notebooks. They can also serve as answer keys for students to self-check their work.

Students will also;

• Assess objects in their environment that are constructed for similar purposes (shoes, houses) using words, pictures, lists and Venn diagrams.

• Identify materials used to make objects and structures.

• Identify different types of fasteners and their uses.

• Identify the sources in nature (trees, sand, oil, rock) of some common materials (paper, glass, plastic, jewels) with an interactive notebook activity.

• Compare (using Venn diagrams) objects and materials found in nature and those made by humans.

• Describe some alternate ways of 'disposing' of something that they no longer need or use.

• Identify objects that can be reused or recycled.

5 R's - Respecter, Repenser, Réutiliser, Réduire, Recycler

Students will identify the kinds of waste produced in the classroom. Then, they will plan and carry out a course of action to minimize this waste. Display the posters (in both colour and black & white) for drawings or photos from your classroom of the 5R's in action!

• The culminating STEM activity asks students to demonstrate their understanding of everyday structures by building either a birdhouse OR a tent OR a playground structure. Guiding questions, student worksheet and rubric are included. I often use this as their science fair project assignment. An English version of the project assignment page is included. This can be sent home with students if necessary for parents to understand and/or help with the project.

- Student cover page is also included (black & white version of product cover)

- Teacher Guide is included (in English)

- Rubric is also included (Expectations and Levels 1 - 4)**

→ Each page has the specific expectation(s) at the top. These learning goals will help to focus your lessons within the unit.

Add your own ideas as well to help students explore and understand everyday structures, materials and objects!

Enjoy!

**Please note that the RUBRIC is written in ENGLISH. This is because if the culminating task/project is done at home, it ensures that the expectations are clear since many parents of students I teach do not read or speak French.**
