Structured Maths Approach - a structured maths scope and sequence for teachers and students in Year 0-3.
A structured scope and sequence serves as the backbone of effective teaching and learning. It provides teachers with a clear roadmap, ensuring that each concept builds upon the foundation laid before it. By carefully sequencing mathematical topics and activities, we empower our young learners to gradually develop their skills and confidence. With a well-organized structure, teachers can create a supportive learning environment that allows students to thrive, leading to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
Split into four phases, giving a comprehensive unpacking for students in the classroom.
Phase four is best suited for Year 3 classrooms; or students on their mathematics learning journey with a foundational knowledge of numbers to 10,000, and addition/subtraction to 1,000 and introduction to multiplication/division.
Phase Four covers four chunks of learning:
Chunk 1
Lesson 1: Identify, say and name numbers 1-10,000
Lesson 2: FNWS to 10,000
Lesson 3: BNWS from 10,000
Lesson 4: Ordering numbers 1-10,000
Lesson 5: Comparing numbers to 10,000
Lesson 6: Place value (composing and decomposing)
Lesson 7: Times table facts (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3’s, 4’s, 8’s)
Chunk 2
Lesson 8: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 (counting on/counting back)
Lesson 9: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 (place value)
Lesson 10: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 (using a number line)
Lesson 11: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 (tidy number)
Lesson 12: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 (reversing)
Lesson 13: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 (algorithms)
Lesson 14: Word problems to 1,000
Chunk 3
Lesson 15: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 strategies
Lesson 16: Multiply by 1 digit number
Lesson 17: Multiply by 2 digit numbers
Lesson 18: Divide with a single digit and no remainders
Lesson 19: Word problems using multiplication and division
Lesson 20: Times table facts (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3’s, 4’s, 8’s)
Chunk 4
Lesson 21: Addition and subtraction to 1,000 strategies
Lesson 22: Multiplication and division
Lesson 23: Fractions (naming, writing, representing, ordering)
Lesson 24: Equivalent fractions
Lesson 25: Finding fractions of a whole
Lesson 26: Adding fractions with like denominators
Lesson 27: Times table facts (2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3’s, 4’s, 8’s)
