Stocks and Bonds Lesson Bundle

Are you looking for an interactive way to teach the stock market? I use this lesson with my Personal Finance class to cover stocks and bonds. Start the lesson with a stock market web quest scavenger hunt to interest students. Then, use the Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation for direct instruction and the stock market simulation activity to put into practice course concepts. The stock market simulation takes about 30-45 minutes to complete and does NOT run the course of the semester, which is perfect if you're crunched on time with lots of content to teach! It is also provided with print and digital to meet the needs of your classroom.

For the activity I provide students with a list of stocks (included). Students then use the worksheet to list the stock name, stock symbol, current price, and determine how many shares to purchase based on a set amount of money.

After students have completed part 1, provide students with a computer/laptop so that they can look up the current prices and recompute their totals keeping the number of shares they purchased the same. I then have each group record the amount of money they have at the end of the simulation on the board to see who ended with the most money (largest capital gain). This shows students how stocks prices change over time.

The 2nd page of this activity asks questions that require students to reflect on their learning. Students will explain capital gains and loses, diversification, and investing in the stock market.
