Written by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812, the lyrics to the U.S. National Anthem will be analyzed and rewritten by students to gain a better understanding of this great song. History, vocabulary, and creative writing are all an essential part of this activity. One worksheet includes student directions, a visual copy of the lyrics to the Star Spangled Banner, and a list of vocabulary words with their definitions. The second worksheet has all four stanzas to the National Anthem for students to see the full song. Many do not know that there are really four verses to our National Anthem. We only sing the first! Enjoy this fun little activity with your students.
