What educators are saying

Great activity for this time of year for my kinders who can write independently, with support, while I am working with small groups.
I love the scaffolded levels of this resource. It's great for us to slowly build and become more independent. Thank you!

Description

Spring Writing Prompts with Sentence Starters is a differentiated resource including 4 different stages (pre-literate, emergent, transitional, and fluent writers). This product is created for a wide range of learners in kindergarten and first grade. There is a total of 5 options for each writing prompt which works great for English Language Learners and Special Education. Included with each prompt is a full sentence, sentence starter, vocabulary bank, picture bank (picture prompt), or a blank writing space. There is a self-check rubric at each stage where students can make sure they have included a capital letter, ending mark, finger spaces, and that their words and picture match.

⭐Stage 1

Most Kindergarten/PreK students will be in Stage 1 at the beginning of the academic year. Students are learning how to use a pencil, use lines, and understand that letters represent sounds that we read.

The page is created with a complete sentence and a graphic vocabulary bank. Students will trace the typed words (dotted font). Encourage students to use all the graphic words in their pictures and label them. This also helps develop their copying skill.

Stage 2

This stage is for emergent writers. An emergent writer can copy environmental print, create letter strings, and understand the use of beginning sounds.

This stage is created with a graphic vocabulary bank and a sentence starter. Students can use the provided graphic vocabulary to make connections to the sentence. They can choose to use some of the provided words, use sight words, or try creating their own words.

Stage 3

This stage is for transitional writers. A transitional writer will understand letter/sound relationships and can apply beginning and ending sounds. In this stage, students are working on developing medial sounds.

The page is created with a graphic vocabulary word bank. Students can use the graphic word bank to help them create a sentence.

Stage 4

2 Options! In this stage, students are fluent writers. They can organize their writing, express their opinions, and can form words by writing the sounds they hear.

For students in Stage 4, use the page with graphics (no typed words) or the blank page. Students still need the self-check list but will be able to generate their topic and words without help.
