Speech Toss BUNDLE a speech therapy game

Do you need a super fun activity to keep your students engaged? Do you have mixed articulation and language groups? Try this fun pom pom tossing game for common articulation and language targets

Your students will love tossing pom poms into mini-cups while practicing articulation and language skills. This activity was designed to be simple, engaging, and low prep!

Materials Needed: Artic/Vocab Toss Mats, (10) 3oz cups (my favorite brand is Dixie), (10) fuzzy craft pom poms (I use 3/4 inch size, the bigger ones will knock over the cups).

Optional materials for the variations: bingo chips, bingo dauber, play dough

Assembly: Low Prep! Print the Artic/Vocab Toss mats in color, one sided. Laminate or place in sheet protectors (optional, not required).

You can buy the materials needed on Amazon or at your local grocery/craft stores.

To use: Set the Artic/Vocab Toss Mat across from the student (by skill area) and give them 10 pom poms. I do this activity on the floor to allow more tossing space. Line up the cups over the circles on the mat. I do this game in rounds. The student will toss ten pom poms at the mat and try to land them in the cups. At the end of the round, the student will practice the articulation or language target under the cups that the pom poms landed in. For the next round, take those cups off of the mat and toss again. Continue until all of the cups are gone and all of the circles have been practiced. I suggest doing a couple practice tosses to gauge the distance needed for the mat.

Language/Vocabulary skills included in the vocabulary pack (2 pages per skill)

• Categories: There are three types of category mats included: Name items in a Category, Name the Category, & Which One Doesn’t Belong (I have my students tell how the other two items are alike)

• Compare/Contrast: The student is prompted to tell how two items are the same (alike) and how they are different. There are pictures as visual aids on the mats.

• WH-Questions: There are separate mats for what, where, when, who, why, and how questions. There is also a mat for mixed wh-questions. The student is prompted to answer basic, functional wh-questions.

• Vocabulary: These mats give a definition or description and the student has to name the vocabulary word. Please note, I used functional vocabulary words.

• Associations: The student has to fill in the missing word to an association close phrase “a shoe goes with a _____” I take any logical association (answers may vary among students).

• Antonyms: The student is asked to name the antonym of the given word/picture.

• Synonyms: The student is asked to name the synonym of the given word/picture.

• Regular & Irregular Past Tense Verbs: The student is provided with a present progressive phrase (Today he is…) and prompted to say the regular/irregular past tense with a cloze phrase (Yesterday he…)

• Regular/Irregular Plurals: The student is shown the singular picture and then a plural picture and prompted to fill in the close phrase with the regular/irregular plural. (Here is one ___, here are three___).

• Analogies: The student is prompted to fill in the simple analogies (functional vocabulary).

• Fix the Sentence: There are two types of mats: Sentence Absurdities & Subject-Verb Agreement. Read the sentence to the student (or have them read it out loud). Prompt the student to change the sentence so it makes sense (sentence absurdities) or make the subject-verb agree.

• Multiple Meaning Words: The student is prompted to name two meanings of the given word.

• Idioms: The literal representation is on the block. The student is prompted to tell what the idiom really means.

• Blank mat to write you own targets on!

Variations:

****If you don’t have cups, you could still have students toss pom poms and try to land on the circles.

****Play dough mats:. The student will squish play dough over each circle after they practice the target word.

****Bingo chips: The students will place a bingo chip over each circle as they practice the target word.

****Bingo Daubers/crayons: Use the black and white mat to dot or color each picture after they student practices it.

I also included a cute, cup-shaped tag with the game instructions to send home with your students. I use a gallon size bag and fill it with pom poms, cups, and Artic/Vocab Toss mats. Perfect for summer practice!
