Description

El Mes de la Historia de la Mujer (Women's History Month) for the Spanish Dual Language / Immersion classroom. This month-long unit incorporates the study of 20 women, five in each of four categories: Human Rights, Politics, Science and The Arts. (See below for list of women targeted.) No English on student pages!

With an individual research project, oral presentation, creation of a unit-long lapbook-style packet, and a classroom timeline display, this fun and colorful product is designed to target 20+ Common Core Language Arts Standards for grades 2, 3 and 4.

Individual Research Project

Each student (or pair/small group) selects one woman to research. (See below for list of women included in this packet.)

Students use multimedia sources to gather facts about their target woman.

Students record facts and list their sources.

Students record and define unknown words encountered in their research on glossary entry slips, for later inclusion in their lapbook-style unit packet.

Students write a 1+ page essay on the life and accomplishments of their target woman.

Students present their essay orally.

While one student/pair/group is presenting his/her/their target woman, remaining students listen for key information to record on their “trading cards” for inclusion in their unit packet.

Students consider what they have learned about their target woman, then write and illustrate “Un día con __,” a fictional story about a day with that woman. Students may read aloud and discuss their stories with a partner or small group.

Timeline Display

Using timeline date cards included, teacher creates a 1890-2020 timeline display along a large wall.

Students create a visual display of their target woman. Display includes caricature and essay.

Students use yarn, string, or ribbon to connect their display to one or more points along the timeline (e.g., woman’s year of birth, year of major accomplishment, etc).

Students fill in and post a timeline labeling plate, denoting the significance of the year they chose on the timeline.
