    LAS POSADAS

    1. Bilingual Reading on the celebration Las Posadas. This allows for differentiation in the classroom. It would be appropriate for both beginning and intermediate students.

    2. Las Posadas Cognates: The students will learn how important an awareness of cognates is when learning a foreign language. In this exercise students will match the Spanish words on the left with the English cognates on the right. All of the cognates in this exercise are from the reading.

    3. Las Posadas Vocabulary Matching (Two different worksheets)

    -Match Spanish vocabulary words with English words.

    -Match Spanish vocabulary words with Spanish definitions.

    This unit includes vocabulary words such as el peregrino, rezar, la medíanoche, la Misa de Gallo, le villancico, dar una paliza, la estrofa, el rosario etc.

    4. Vocabulary/ Grammar Review with Spanish Idiom

    LEVEL 1:

    In this worksheet students will discover the hidden Spanish idiom by identifying different general vocabulary words from different categories (i.e body parts, numbers, colors, animals, vegetables, job titles, family members, and months of the year.) After identifying the words according to their categories, the students will then follow the directions and color them accordingly. If students do not have crayons or colored pencils they can simply cross out the words instead. The blocks that remain will reveal the Spanish idiom, “Alcanzar las estrellas.” (i.e. to reach for the stars) Next, students will discuss with their teacher the meaning of this idiom.

    LEVEL 2: Repaso de Gramática con Modismo

    In this worksheet students will discover the hidden idiom by identifying different parts of speech (i.e pronombres sustantivos, verbos regulares del pasado, verbos del futuro, adjetivos masculinos, los adverbios, los sustantivos plurales, los verbos irregulares del presente and los verbos irregulares del pasado.) After identifying the words according to their parts of speech, they will then follow the directions and color them accordingly. If students do not have crayons or colored pencils they can simply cross out the words instead. The blocks that remain will reveal the idiom “Alcanzar las estrellas.” (i.e. to reach for the stars) Next, students will discuss with their teacher the meaning of this idiom.

    5. Spanish Verbs Present and Past Tenses (2 worksheets): Students will choose a verb from the box to complete the sentences first in the present tense and then in the past tense.

    6. Write the Questions: Students will form questions using the cues provided. Then, they will answer the questions using the information found in the reading.

    7. Las Posadas Grammar Review: Students will write a Spanish noun, adjective and verb for each letter in the words Feliz Navidad.

    8. Las Posadas Scrambled Words: Students will unscramble vocabulary words from this unit.

    9. Word Art: This worksheet can be used to review vocabulary words related to Las Posadas. Students should be encouraged to color and decorate the vocabulary words. It is very beneficial for students to use new vocabulary words in a variety of different ways. You could also encourage students to create their own word art projects using vocabulary from this unit.

    When students have finished this word art worksheet, it can be easily displayed to make a beautiful bulletin board for Las Posadas.

    CINCO DE MAYO

    1. Bilingual reading on the history and celebration of Cinco de Mayo. It includes a two page reading in both English and Spanish. This allows for differentiation in the classroom. It would be appropriate for both beginning and intermediate students.

    2. Comprehension Questions: Students will form questions using the cues provided. Then, they will answer the questions using the information found in the reading.

    3. Cinco de Mayo Cognates: The students will learn how important an awareness of cognates is when learning a foreign language. In this exercise students will match the Spanish words on the left with the English cognates on the right. All of the cognates in this exercise are from the reading.

    4. Cinco de Mayo Vocabulary Matching:

    -Match the Pictures with the correct Spanish word.

    -Match Spanish Vocabulary Words with English words.

    -Match Spanish Vocabulary Words with Spanish definitions.

    5. Cinco de Mayo Vocabulary Fill in the Blanks

    6. Cinco de Mayo Vocabulary Review with Spanish Saying (Level 1)

    In this worksheet students will discover the hidden Spanish saying by identifying different general vocabulary words from different categories (i.e body parts, numbers, colors, animals, foods, job titles, family members, and months of the year.) After identifying the words according to their categories, the students will then follow the directions and color them accordingly. If students do not have crayons or colored pencils they can simply cross out the words instead. The blocks that remain will reveal the Spanish saying for Cinco de Mayo, “¡Viva la Raza! Next, students will discuss with their teacher the meaning of this saying.

    7. Cinco de Mayo Grammar Review with Spanish Saying (Level 2)

    The same as #5 but this time students will have to find the correct parts of speech to discover the Spanish saying.

    8. Mingle Activity Level 1: Find Someone Who….(ir + infinitive)

    Students will get out of their chairs and walk around during this mingle activity. They will ask each other the questions indicated in each of the boxes on the worksheet. For example:

    Student A: ¿Vas a ir a México para el Cinco de Mayo?

    Student B: Sí, voy a ir a México.

    OR

    Student B: No, no voy a ir a México.

    -When a student finds someone who is going to do that activity, have that person write his or her name in the box.

    -The first student with the most signatures wins the game.

    9. Mingle Activity Level 2: Find Someone Who… (Past Tense) This is the same mingle activity, but at a higher level of difficulty. Now, the students will need to ask and answer the questions in the past tense.

    10. Celebramos Cinco de Mayo (Level 1): Students will put a check in each box next to the activities they are going to do this year to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Then, they will write a sentence for each one using the grammatical structure “ir + infinitive”.

    11. Celebramos Cinco de Mayo (Level 2): Students will put a check in each box next to the activities they did last year to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Then, they will write a sentence for each one using the past tense.

    12. Cinco de Mayo Unscramble the Vocabulary Words: All of the words come from the reading.

    13. Cinco de Mayo Grammar Review: Students will write a Spanish noun, adjective and verb for each letter in the words Cinco de Mayo.

    14. Spanish Word Art: This worksheet can be used to review vocabulary words related to Cinco de Mayo. Students should be encouraged to color and decorate the vocabulary words. It is very beneficial for second language learners to use new vocabulary words in a variety of different ways. You could also encourage students to create their own word art projects using vocabulary from their Cinco de Mayo unit.

    When students have finished this word art worksheet, it will also make a beautiful for the class bulletin board.

    This unit includes vocabulary words such as ejército, desfile, cultura, conquistar, bandera, batalla, victoría, orgullo, fuegos artificiales etc.

    DÍA DE MUERTOS

    3. Day of the Dead Vocabulary Matching: Three different worksheets.

    -Match the Spanish Vocabulary Words with the pictures.

    -Match Spanish Vocabulary Words with English words.

    -Match Spanish Vocabulary Words with Spanish definitions.

    This unit includes vocabulary words such as fallecer, vela, ofrenda, altar, panteón, calavera, difunto, pan de muerto, papel picado, esqueleto, cempazuchitl, un ser querido etc.

    4. Day of the Dead Spanish Idiom (Level 1 & 2)

    LEVEL 1: Vocabulary Review with Spanish Idiom

    In this worksheet students will discover the hidden Spanish idiom by identifying different general vocabulary words from different categories (i.e body parts, numbers, colors, animals, vegetables, job titles, family members, and months of the year.)     8. Decorate your classroom for the Day of the Dead with 3 fun worksheets. Students can either color or draw and color a sugar skull. Also, in the final worksheet students will draw an alter that represents the life of a person of their choice. They will need to include their favorite foods, drinks, activities, hobbies, accomplishments etc. They will then label the items that they have drawn in Spanish.

    NOCHE DE BRUJAS

    1. Bilingual Reading on the celebration of Halloween. This allows for differentiation in the classroom. It would be appropriate for both beginning and intermediate students.

    2. La Noche de Brujas Cognates: The students will learn how important an awareness of cognates is when learning a foreign language. In this exercise students will match the Spanish words on the left with the English cognates on the right. All of the cognates in this exercise are from the reading.

    3. La Noche de Brujas Vocabulary (3 worksheets)

    • Write the correct Spanish vocabulary word under each picture.
    • Match Spanish vocabulary words with English words.
    • Match Spanish vocabulary words with Spanish definitions.

    This unit includes vocabulary words such as la bruja, la calabaza, el fantasma, el huerto de calabazas, truco o trato etc.

    4. Fill in the Blanks with the correct vocabulary word from the word bank.

    5. La Noche de Brujas Comprehension Questions: Students will form questions using the cues provided. Then, they will answer the questions using the information found in the reading.

    6. Vocabulary/ Grammar Review with Spanish Simile

    LEVEL 1:

    In this worksheet students will discover the hidden Spanish simile by identifying different general vocabulary words from different categories (i.e body parts, numbers, colors, days of the week, months, seasons, job titles, and family members). After identifying the words according to their categories, the students will then follow the directions and color them accordingly. If students do not have crayons or colored pencils they can simply cross out the words instead. The blocks that remain will reveal the Spanish simile, “tan sabio como el búho”. Finally, students will write a sentence using the simile.

    LEVEL 2: Repaso de Gramática con un Símil

    In this worksheet students will discover the hidden simile by identifying different parts of speech (i.e pronombres sustantivos, los adverbios, verbos irregulares del presente, verbos regulares del pasado, verbos irregulares del pasado, verbos regulares del futuro, y verbos irregulares del futuro.) After identifying the words according to their parts of speech, they will then follow the directions and color them accordingly. If students do not have crayons or colored pencils they can simply cross out the words instead. The blocks that remain will reveal the simile “tan blanco como el fantasma”. Finally, students will write a sentence using the Spanish simile.
