Two students have opposing views on the topic. Each text is approximately 2 pages.

TEACHERS CAN USE THE STORY WITHOUT REFERRING TO THE VIDEO OR MOVIE TALK

Synopsis

Two teenage girls discover a picture (no pictures are shown, just reactions to the picture) of a friend online. The make a stark revelation about the picture and realize that they too may have been tricked into sending pictures of themselves (swimsuit pictures for a fake modeling agency) online.

With 600 total words and only 64 new words (non cognates such as "padre, madre, dijo, miró, estaba, etc,"). This story is comprehensible and highly relevant to our teen culture today. Many teens, especially girls (although boys as well) are bombarded with requests for pictures. This story, with a dramatic ending (parents play a powerful role in helping their children), will engage students with the vocabulary and themes associated with SOCIAL MEDIA.

27. Roll-a-video activity: Group students in pairs or groups of three. Give each group die. They will roll the die and then respond to the number on which it lands. The student will then respond to the questions. There are three to four questions per tier. For example, if a student rolls the die and it lands on question number one, that student has to answer one of the questions from that tier. See the picture to the right.

28. Post-viewing comprehension questions. These questions feature an assortment of lower to higher level thinking questions.

29. Preguntas personales: this activity includes PQA type questions to invite students to think about the message of the video and their own lives.

Synopsis

"Caray, mi abuelita tiene un móvil inteligente" is a short story for Spanish 2+ (although, I used this at the end of Spanish 1), about a young girl who gets her grandmother a phone. The story is set in the grandmother's home, on the day of her birthday. Many family members come to visit as the grandmother makes "arroz, plátano, y flan (cultural foods and family vocabulary)." Sara, the granddaughter walks her grandmother through how to use a Smartphone (technology vocabulary, commands), when she discovers that her grandmother has a few secrets, and she wants to go on a dating site! The story is told in the past tense, which an emphasis on preterite and imperfect. See the full synopsis below!

This story features illustrations, one ad (grandmother's dating website, and profile of grandmother).

This short story can be read individually as part of Free Voluntary Reading (FVR booklet included) or as a class. I used this story as part of my technology unit. It includes many relevant terms that students used today to interact with technology such as "descargar una aplicación”, “subir una foto al Instagram”, “chatear con los amigos”, etc. Many of the words are naturally embedded into the context of the story and repeated.

Synopsis: Sara enjoys hanging out with her crazy "Primos" and “Tíos" at their weekly “Reunión” at "La casa de abuela.” From listening to her crazy aunt's tales about the adventures of internet dating to her grandmother's funny jokes (comprehensible & appropriate), she wouldn't want to be anywhere else on Sunday. However, this Sunday is super special because it is her grandmother's birthday, and Sara has just made her day by buying her a smartphone. While Sara teaches her “abuelita” how to use the smartphone, her grandmother discovers some “creative uses” for her new smartphone. Abuela Irma realizes even at 75 years old, her best years are ahead of her!

NEW ADDITION: LA OBSESIón DIGITAL

La obsesión digital will have something for everyone! Nuria and her family are utterly dependent on technology. Her parents, once a tranquil and loving couple, struggle to balance the demands of their jobs while spending valuable time with their kids. The effects are obvious: Nuria's brother is far deep into the world of virtual technology, and Nuria is addicted to social media.

However, when her grandma’s comes to visit, the family experiences an expected shake up; and their secrets are slowly revealed. Grandma has a plan for the family (plus, they cannot resist her cooking). Before they "accept" the terms and conditions of this new approach to life, they will have to "unplug" from their social media, put their devices in "airplane" mode, while pushing past their addictions to be a family. Can they do it? Can you?
