Description
Engage your students to look critically at news media sources and scope out unreliable, bias, and fake sources. This lesson will teach students how to differentiate between credible, reliable news from “fake news.”
First, they’ll learn about six types of news media (fake news, credible news report, amended news report, satirical news report, political cartoon, and opinion piece) with an engaging digital scavenger hunt challenge.
For this activity, students will explore the sources in an interactive Google Site to uncover a riddle. This scavenger hunt activity functions similarly to a digital escape room or breakout room. As students complete each activity, they will complete activities and collect letters. Once all collected, the letters will be unscrambled to answer the riddle. They will check their riddle on the Google Site and show you for credit once they get it right.
After their training, they will participate in a follow-up activity to show what they know by finding their own examples of the six news media they already learned about. This activity will be completed in Google Forms for a sleek design and fast and easy feedback for you!

Please note: This is a digital activity. Students will click on links to explore sources, and they will need the internet to find their own sources. Therefore, students must have devices with access to the internet to complete this activity. I recommend opening all links before the lesson with enough time to ensure all websites are unblocked by your school.
This Google Site Scavenger Hunt is NOT editable due to the nature of the activity. The Google Form follow-up activity is completely editable.
