What educators are saying

I loved being able to analyze the songs with them. They enjoyed finding their own song and listening to the playlist that I created with their song choices.
Giving students the option to pick and choose their own songs as poetry really brought a lot of perspective to them and I had several that better understood their songs because of this.

How to use this Song Lyric Analysis Lesson Plan:

Make connections between your language arts curriculum and your students' personal interests with this poetry lesson! Students will explore poetry through popular culture by analyzing song lyrics with the resources provided.  This lesson includes a slideshow lesson, informational handout, a practice annotation worksheet, analysis graphic organizer, and an application activity that can be used with any song lyrics.

You can begin this lesson with the Poetry in Song Lyrics Slideshow Lesson. This lesson explores the relationship between poetry and music and demonstrates how poetry is relevant to culture, history, and students’ everyday lives.  It also differentiates between music lyrics and a lyric poem - an important distinction for students to understand.

The information from the slideshow lesson is also provided with the Poetry in Song Lyrics Informational Handout. Students can refer to the informational handout and review the learning material while they complete the remaining activities within this lesson.

Students will then practice annotating and analyzing poetry using the Close Reading and Annotation Activity. This activity models the close reading and annotation process using the song lyrics for "Therefore I Am" by Billie Eilish. Students will use the Song Analysis Graphic Organizer to plan the outline for their analysis paragraph.

To consolidate this activity, an answer key with a student example has been provided and can be used to demonstrate these skills.

Students can use their Annotating Music Lyrics Bookmark as a personal anchor chart while they read, annotate, and write about music lyrics independently.  This two-sided bookmark scaffolds the close reading process by offering step-by-step instructions to annotate lyrics, along with extension activities and guidance for writing a close reading response.

Students can then complete the Application Activity by finding their own school-appropriate song to analyze. This activity will assess and consolidate students’ independent understanding of the skills taught in this lesson.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Extremely satisfied

This was a great lesson to make poetry seem relevant to my 9s and 10s.  The example struck a chord with them, and they were very receptive to being able to pick their own lyrics to analyze.  My students are all at different levels - some were able to interpret literary devices, and others simply paraphrased.  For all of them though, it was a great way for them to see the connection between poetry and their interests.

I used this resource with my at-risk students.  I found it very helpful when walking them through how poets use rhyme and meter.
