What educators are saying

My students loved using this quadratics land game as a review for solving quadratic equations. The variety of questions was great! I was able to customize to what my kids needed (we don't do complex solutions in this course).

Description

This is an awesome review game for solving Quadratic Equations. There are so many different ways, and this games puts all of the various methods into one, fun, activity!

This game will cover Solving Quadratic Equations by:
1. Completing the Square*
2. Square Root Property*
3. Factoring
4. Graphing
5. Using the Quadratic Formula*
6. Choose your own method! :)*
*some answers may be complex solutions

The game is simple. You play like you would play candy land! Roll the dice, move the number of spaces your dice says. The color you land on correlates to a color card, which tells you how to solve the quadratic equation. EVERYONE solves the problem and compares their answers. If everyone gets the same answers, the player stays where they are and the next player takes their turn. If they do not all have the same answer, they compare their answers and determine who (if anyone) is correct. The person to the player's left gets the first chance at being correct, and then continues around the circle. Whomever has the correct answer gets to steal the other persons progress (i.e.: move 6 spaces if that is what player 1 was supposed to do).

This activity includes:
Quadratics Land Game Board
Quadratics Land Activity Sheet (for students to do their work)
Quadratics Land Playing Cards (20 of each for each type of solving)
Quadratics Land Answer Key (solves all 200+ problems)

My students had a BLAST with this game, hope you enjoy!

Extra Materials Needed:
1 Dice per Group
**I laminated my boards and then had the students use dry erase makers to mark their spot on the board, it worked great!

Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.
Solve quadratic equations in one variable.
Use the method of completing the square to transform any quadratic equation in 𝘹 into an equation of the form (𝘹 – 𝘱)² = 𝘲 that has the same solutions. Derive the quadratic formula from this form.
Solve quadratic equations by inspection (e.g., for 𝘹² = 49), taking square roots, completing the square, the quadratic formula and factoring, as appropriate to the initial form of the equation. Recognize when the quadratic formula gives complex solutions and write them as 𝘢 ± 𝘣𝘪 for real numbers 𝘢 and 𝘣.
