Solving Quadratic Equations Review Activity - Jeopardy:
This Jeopardy style game is a really fun classroom activity! Students will solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, using the quadratic formula, and then using any method they choose in the 'mixed bag' column. This Jeopardy game allows the teacher to keep score on the game and has timers for each slide! *This file is in PowerPoint.
Directions:
- Divide the students into groups - I typically prefer to have 4 groups but you may have up to 5. Open the PowerPoint presentation then click on the slideshow tab and select the start slideshow from beginning. When the title slide opens up click on ‘Click here to begin the game’.
- You have 4 categories: ‘Factoring', ‘Quadratic Formula', 'Completing the Square', and ‘Mixed Bag' (solving using any method they want). Students will select what category and the level of difficulty (the higher the point value, the more difficult the problem). Teacher tip: I have each group show me their work when they get their answer so I can check that they used the appropriate method.
- Click on the number in the middle of the category you want to select and it will take you to the appropriate slide. Have students work on the problem within their group. (Teacher Tip: I require that every student attempt the problem within the group and then choose their final answer amongst the group's work).
- There is a timer near the bottom of each slide. I set the easier slides for 1 minute and the more difficult ones for 2 minutes. You may allow more time as you deem necessary. The timer will slowly fade away as the time clicks down. Time is up when the time has completely disappeared.
- Once the time is up, you must click on the slide to see the answer. To get back to the game board, click on the home icon at the bottom of the slide. You will know that a question has already been viewed because the number will change colors from blue to white.
- Remember to record the points that each group earns. There is a place for this on the Jeopardy homepage.
- There is a 'Daily Double' slide (the students do not know where it's located. This slide is worth twice the points.
- The 'Final Jeopardy' slide is saved for the end of the game. Just like in the real Jeopardy game, teams may wager as much or as little as they want, however, I don't let groups wager more points than they have.
***Teacher Tip: I allow other groups to ‘steal’ the problem if the original group was incorrect. I only award them half the points so no group pulls too far ahead. This is also a way for all students to review each problem and stay invested in the game even when it's not their turn. Also, I tell my students to keep their answers in radical form when appropriate so answers are in that form, however, you may decide decimals are more appropriate for your students. :)
