Solving Problems by Using the Correct Operation

This Math Activ Studio flipchart teaches students to solve problems by using the correct operation. This lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, 6.7 - 1st grade. This lesson begins with the "Problem of the Day" which gives students a multi-step word problem. Next, the flipchart displays the daily objective, then reviews vocabulary terms needed to understand the content of the lesson: addition and subtraction. Next, the students are given a word problem that requires subtraction, in which they must fill in the missing part and write out the subtraction problem, the next page gives the same type of activity with addition. The next slide gives students a scenario, in which they must decide which operation to use, and gives them a step by step process on how to decide the appropriate strategy. Then, they may work this out as a whole class, as partners, or as individuals. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions). The next page gives a review and closure question allowing students to choose the appropriate strategy to solve the word problem, along with a question that lets them share a problem about pigs using subtraction. Last, is a math journal entry in which students must draw a picture that shows how to solve a problem using a specific strategy and write the mathematical sentence.
