What educators are saying
Description
Solve and Cover is a self-checking 1st grade math centers game that can be played ALL YEAR LONG. I developed this game to help streamline my math center routine and give students the opportunity to review essential math skills taught throughout the year in first grade. Students can play this game independently, in partners, or with a small group.
This Math Center set includes:
- 50+ Math Mats (Black and White option also included for each mat!)
- 40 sets of math task cards with first grade skills (option to print back to back for self-checking!)
- Storage cover and labels for each math skill
This is a mix and match math center to play all year long!
1. Choose the task card set with the skill you would like students to work on.
2. Choose the seasonal or non-seasonal math mat you would like students to use.
3. Add some manipulatives! This could be counters, cubes, mini erasers, etc.!
How to play:
Students will look at the problem on the task card, solve it in the answer space on the math mat, then turn over the task card to check their answer. If correct, the student will cover one of the circles on their math mat with a manipulative. For manipulatives, I use anything from chips, cubes, mini erasers, etc. I like to change it up to keep students engaged! To win, students try to be the first to cover all the circles on their mat.
Why math center routines?
I love math centers in my first grade classroom! BUT I found that I was spending so much time planning and prepping for centers each week. Plus it took up so much instructional time to teach the students new math games every week. To solve this problem I developed math games that could be played over and over again! Students already know the procedures and expectations, but we just change out the math skill!

Solve and Cover Organization:
Task Cards:
To make this a self-checking math center, print the skills double sided. The answer will be on the back of the task card. I like to print the task cards on colored card stock then laminate for durability. I cut out the cards after laminating.
I store all of my Solve and Cover task card sets in the Iris Photo Boxes from Michaels. I use the included labels so I know which skill is in each box! You can also store the task card sets with binder clips or zip lock bags.
Math Mats:
I like to store my math mats in a binder using sheet protectors!
To prep my math centers for the week, I grab the box of task cards I want to use, the math mats, and some manipulatives and put them in my math tub!
Looking for other math centers you can use over and over?
