Description

This PowerPoint explores the culture of Trench Warfare in The Great War, examining the music of the Enlisted men and the poetry of the Officer Class.

Including audio recordings of WW1 songs and poetry of luminaries like Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, students discuss the differences between the two classes and why/how they experienced the war so differently.

Why is it that the officer class wrote and read morose, dark poetry and created tortured art? Might Owen and Sassoon have written such beautiful poetry had they been "rank and file grunts"?

Students will listen and be encouraged to sing along with such important songs like "We're Here" and "It's a Long Way to Tipperary".

In the past, I've enlisted students in the class who can play guitar to help along by learning a few of the songs.
