What educators are saying

Thank you for providing UFLI aligned materials that give my students an opportunity to practice skills independently.

Description

This package of worksheets was inspired by Lesson 60 in UFLI Foundations, an explicit and systematic phonics program. However, you do not need to be following the UFLI lesson plans to find value in targeting specific reading and writing skills. Here, the goal is to understand how the letter C makes a soft /s/ sound when it is followed by the silent E.

The goal of this worksheet package is to offer extended practice in reading and understanding how to form words with the _CE pattern. Explicitly and systematically teaching phonics is argued to be the best way to teach young children how to read. These worksheets are designed to offer further practice in understanding the _CE word pattern, practice that goes beyond what you might have available in Tier I instruction and serving as valuable supplementary material.

This download features two sets of the same six worksheets, the first set in color and the second in black and white to allow for easy printing and coloring by early finishers. Each of the six worksheets offers a different way to explore word building and reading with the _CE pattern. The six unique worksheets included here are:

  1. Magic Squares: 2 Magic Squares encourage students to make words that include the studied pattern. This helps emerging readers to look for patterns and rhymes as they begin word building.
  2. Unscramble: 5 pictures are paired with potential spellings of each depiction. Students are asked to circle and then write out the correct spelling for further word-building practice.
  3. Word Search: Students are asked to find 9 _CE words in this fun activity. Word searches or word find games are great for practicing and improving the reading skills of scanning, decoding, and word recognition.
  4. Building Words: This is an ideal beginner worksheet that encourages students to build and create words using the _CE pattern. Once the new word is written out, students are encouraged to draw a picture of the word they created to further cement understanding.
  5. Spell and Read: This is for next-level word-building practice with _CE. There are 9 pictures on this page for students to name, spell, and then re-read each word.
  6. Read and Draw Decodable Passage: This page features a short reading passage that focuses on words with the long a. Students are asked to read, circle the _CE words, and then illustrate the story.
