Description

Culture is a topic covered by every Sociology course. And values and norms are what bind cultures together. This 12-page set of short articles and worksheet-based activities on the integral relationships between social values, norms and their related sanctions is a great supplement that keeps students busy--in a good way--for multiple class periods.

Values and norms are not especially difficult concepts to grasp, but they are fundamental to Sociology. A deep and functional understanding of them is crucial for grasping sociological content your students will have to deal with throughout the course. I found them somewhat awkward to explain separately, considering how inter-related they are, until I created this step-by-step approach that gradually builds on each concept in a carefully planned order.

This package includes: 1 short article explaining the relationships between social values, norms and sanctions; 1 practice worksheet on values and norms, based on the article; 1 practice worksheet on the various types of sanctions, based on the article; 1 (2-sided) worksheet for applying the concept of sanctions to real-life situations; 1 short article on the 3 levels of norms; 1 practice worksheet on norms, based on the article; 1 (2-sided) student-centered worksheet for applying the 3 levels of norms to real-life personal experiences; plus Teacher's Key sheets for each of the objective worksheets.
