I work in an alternative high school in Canada and my students come from a variety of marginalized backgrounds. I have struggled to find easy to understand, social justice topics or lesson plans that can be presented to a group who struggle with school. I wanted to create relevant lessons where these very quiet teens can see themselves in the content and feel empowered to contribute based on their lived experiences.

This lesson is a power point lesson to discuss what constitutes general societal issues in the world. It is a way to show my students what that means exactly and where they fit into this topic. The power point includes points for discussion and can be done as a group or individually. Please feel free to make changes that are tailored to your student body! Have fun with the discussion points and there is a lot of room for some project based learning afterward.
