Social Issues Reading Unit Smartboard

This product is a series of eight reading minilessons which focus on social issues in books. The Smartboard presentation follows the Reader's Workshop model and each lesson includes a connection, a teaching point, a teaching component, active engagement, and link (as well as other supplemental activities and slides). The lessons included in this product are:

1) What are Social Issues
2) Readers Evaluate How Characters are Treated
3) Issues Hide Within the Pages of Books That You Know Well
4) Read with a Lens
5) Social Media
6) Locating the Issues in Your Books
7) Examine How Deep Issues Run
8) Talking Back to the Text

At the end of this Smartboard I included of list of social issues books you can have students read during this unit. I included the reading levels of each book as well. The topics of books I included are:

2) Culture and Diversity (4 books)
3) Divorce and Changing Families (3 books)
4) Courage and Honor (15 books)
5) Forgiveness (6 books)
6) Fitting In (3 books)
7) Overcoming Obstacles (11 books)
