Yearlong Quickwrite SEL Journal (aligned with whiteboard messages)

    Description

Use these daily SEL whiteboard messages to teach social emotional learning skills on a daily basis for the entire year! These 175 whiteboard messages highlight SEL skills for self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationships, and decision-making. Just post one prompt/message each day. Have students read and respond as they walk in the room. These are intended to be quick and easy daily prompts that cover all areas of social emotional learning.

This set can be used with an entire classroom, small groups, homeschool, during morning meeting, or during virtual or distance learning.

    Digital Version

Note that digital versions are now included. This allows you to post a digital SEL message and discussion starter to your students and have them respond digitally in their journals.

You can choose to have students write their responses in their quick write SEL journals (included) or use whiteboard markers to respond right on the board! You can also give time to discuss before or after students respond. These are a great way to build relationships and a more positive classroom climate with your students every morning.

The cards are broken up into 5 sections, one for each area of social emotional learning. Some of the skills targeted in each include:

    • Self-Awareness: positive qualities, understanding strengths, growth mindset, responsibility, good character, understanding emotions, mindfulness, and much more.
    • Self-Management: organization, planning, self-control, being responsible, dealing with anger, managing emotions, coping strategies, and much more.
    • Social Awareness: expected behaviors, good manners, working with others, active listening, good sportsmanship, kindness, fairness, empathy, and much more.
    • Relationships: friendship qualities, making friends, active listening, starting a conversation, thinking of others, dealing with disagreements, conflict resolution, apologizing, and much more.
    • Decision-Making: thinking ahead, self-control, problem-solving skills, ethical decisions, healthy choices, dealing with peer influence, and much more.

    Social Emotional Learning Best Practices

These morning whiteboard messages utilize best practices for SEL instruction, including:

    • Sequenced and connected activities to foster skill development.
    • Active and varied forms of learning, including journal writing, responding at the front board, and holding a group discussion afterwards.
    • Focused approach to emphasize the development of personal and social skills.
    • Explicit instruction to target social emotional skills in an organized and specific way using the five core domains of SEL.

    Why are different versions included?

Two different versions are included for the whiteboard. Note that for both versions, the questions and topics are exactly the same. The only difference is that one version provides more writing room if you want your students to write on the board or add sticky notes.

    No Prep!

These whiteboard messages are a no prep solution to integrating social emotional learning into the day. All you need is a computer and projector to show the daily SEL question each day. If you do not have access to a computer or a projector, another option is to print out the questions and post on the board. Of course, you could also rewrite each question instead with the provided list of daily prompts.

    Quick Write Journal

Along with these whiteboard messages, you will get an optional quick write journal that corresponds to each prompt. This gives students a dedicated spot to write their responses each day. Note that these questions are intended to create quick/brief responses from students, but if you want them to elaborate in more detail, you can use any journal pages you choose.

    Why Teach Social-Emotional Skills

Social and emotional skills are the critical skills that help individuals develop a sense of self, improve confidence, understand emotions, develop positive relationships with others, improve social skills, strengthen decision-making skills, and much more. Several research studies have shown the positive impact social and emotional learning can have on kids and young adults.
