What educators are saying

I have been able to use the passages (appropriate grade level) for my students as we teach each syllable (vce, closed, open etc) - the best activity was matching the syllables, my students loved doing that

Description

This is a BOTH a Reading Intervention Program and Fluency and Reading Comprehension Practice Program for grades 3-9. The reading passages are written specifically for older students who struggle with reading. The content is not “baby-ish” – which fosters student engagement. Eight-nine reading passages that are differentiated for older struggling readers and can be used as a push-in intervention, a research-based fluency tracking program and more. This program helps students learn multi-syllable words through phonics practice. This unit concentrates on multi-syllable VC/CV, VC/V, VC/C and VCe words. It contains fluency, comprehension, word work, lesson plan suggestions, assessments and more. Research-based. Build fluency and comprehension for older struggling readers. PDF and GOOGLE Slides.

Fifteen minutes a day is all it takes.

This program works for resource, whole class, RTI, summer school, and more. If you are using this program with more than one student – partner up. Partnering students is engaging and lets everyone participate. This program helps students build confidence while reinforcing learning; additionally, by reading, tracking and reading again, student exposure to each passage is maximized.

Program Directions and Sample Lesson Plan

This is an evidence-based program that works to increase fluency and comprehension.

How I Teach it: Before I begin, I copy a fluency tracking sheet for each student and attach it to a folder. Students will keep all fluency and comprehension work for this program in their folders. They will track their progress. In the end, you will have evidence of growth or information to help you diagnose further intervention for students who need extra help. This is an example of one way to use this program.

  1. If working one-on-one or with a small group of students administer the “Word Assessments” before each section. If you are working with a large group or whole class – pair students and partner assess. The partner access process is similar to how you will do the daily fluency activities.
  2. Complete the San Diego Reading Assessment or any assessment of your choice to determine each student’s reading level.
  3. PRACTICE THE PROCESS: Use a “Sentence Fluency” passage so all students have the opportunity to be successful. Follow the directions on page 9 so students get the hang of “Fast Fluency.” The “Sentence Fluency” passages are for students who really struggle with reading.
  4. Once reading levels are determined, pair students with students at the same level. This program has a number of reading passages for each skill – V/CV; VC/V; VC/CV; and VCe. Sample week of program.

  • Day 1: Teach concept. Each section has teaching pages to help you help students understand the syllable division rule they will be working on. I teach the concept using active participation techniques. Then, I assign the “Match Syllables” page and/or word search. There are also skill mazes and color sheets to use as early finishers or to reinforce concepts.

  • Day 2: Pair students and assign V/CV passage at their levels (We will call this PASSAGE 1). Each pair of students will havethe same reading passage. OPTIONAL: Give students time to read the passage to themselves to become familiar with the reading. This is not a trick test – it is an exercise to increase fluency and comprehension. Then, follow the script on page 7 and do fluency partner reading. After partner reading, assign the corresponding “Main Idea and Key Details” worksheet. There is a rubric for grading these, but the point is to see growth. Sometimes I allow students to work on this together. Sometimes I have them work alone. What they don’t finish they will complete at home (or the next day in class if you don’t assign homework – alternately – the comprehension worksheet can be broken down into two days.)

  • HOMEWORK DAY 2: Read PASSAGE 1 to an at home adult at least one time.

  • Day 3: Do final timed read for PASSAGE 1. Have students record their work and put the worksheets into their folder. Re-teach skill – use color sheets, mazes, word searches, syllable division worksheets to reinforce skills. ASSIGN THE SECOND PASSAGE FOR V/CV. HOMEWORK is to read PASSAGE 2 to an at home adult.

  • Day 4: Do final partner read for PASSAGE 2. Complete “Main Idea and Summary” worksheet.

  • Day 5: Introduce VC/V REPEAT PROCESS.

This is only one way to use this program.
