This project outlines all the steps necessary, in detail, for students to not only create their own business, but develop a plan for it to be successful. Students will create materials lists, evaluate costs, use systems of equations to determine when their business is profitable, set reasonable goals for their company using polynomial subtraction, utilize proportions to create 5-year assessments, and most importantly, construct a creative and articulate presentation which is sure to be extremely engaging and entertaining! This project is the very best way to bring math into the real world and having fun doing it!

Included in this project bundle:

  • A blank Sink or Swim student project packet
  • A sample Sink or Swim project complete with notes to the teacher with differentiation suggestions.
  • A Sink or Swim project rubric for both the packet and the require presentation.
  • A list of sample questions to offer to guest judges to help the presentation be as interactive as possible!
  • A grading rubric for the judges to help them assess the students!
  • A set of student participation certificates
  • A set of Shark superlative certificates (with creative titles!)
  • A set of student superlative certificates (with creative titles!)

**All documents are provided in PDF and word format for easy adjustments**

Skills addressed:

  • Writing equations in a real word situation
  • Solving systems of equations graphically
  • Solving systems of equations algebraically
  • Polynomial subtraction
  • Proportions
  • Using appropriate vocabulary to describe

Notes to the teacher:

    • Easily differentiable.
    • Students are creative and work independently to master skills in a real-world setting.
    • Students describe the math they're using in the context of the problem.
    • Project sets students up to create an impressive presentation.

Guaranteed engagement! Have students explore their own passions and watch the math come to life!

Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems.
Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales.
Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step, starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.
Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters.
Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with the same solutions.
