Description

This Beginning Multiplication workbook walks students through the basic concepts of single-digit multiplication including equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and skip counting.

In this resource you'll find an example IEP goal, step-by-step math lessons, word problems, reviews and assessments. This evidence-based math intervention is tied to 3rd grade standards and is great for special education math goals and small group math interventions (RTI).

Step-by-Step Math to Mastery™ resources:

Make math easier to understand.

  • Help students over math hurdles with clear, sequential, scaffolded lessons.
  • Prevent overwhelm. Build student confidence.

Make math easier to teach.

  • Save hours of planning and piecing together materials.
  • Paraeducators can deliver quality instruction independently. Open & teach.

This is not just a collection of worksheets. These lessons thoroughly and sequentially cover the progression from equal groups and basic concepts of multiplication to solving problems with factors to 10.

Part 1 of this workbook introduces the concepts of multiplication and visualizing equal groups.  It includes the use of repeated addition, arrays, grid area, skip counting, the commutative property, and the difference between addition and multiplication.

Part 2 addresses using skip counting to solve multiplication problems.  It includes the vocabulary often used in word problems to signal multiplication. Lessons are sequenced to progress from the easiest patterns (counting by 2’s and 5’s) to the most difficult, so that by the time they get to 7’s and 8’s they only have a few new facts to learn.  Related facts are introduced together.

Students will be able to:

• Use multiplication to represent equal groups, repeated addition, arrays, and grid area.

• Write related multiplication facts to show the commutative property

• Know when to add vs. when to multiply

• Use a times table chart

• Multiply factors to 10 using the skip counting strategy

Note: This product does NOT include detailed scripted lesson plans—only the short and simple lessons as shown in the preview. Please look at the preview carefully and ask me any questions you have before you buy.

Middle School and High School Special Education Math Teachers:

This now includes a version with no decorative clip art at the top of pages or on the student booklet cover. Everything else is exactly the same, but you won’t need to worry about whether the clip art might be too young for your students.

Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide. Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
