Similarities and Differences BUNDLE | Interactive Speech Therapy

Are your students able to select or match describing features of vocabulary in common categories, but have trouble transferring that knowledge to identifying similarities and differences on their own? Do you find that teaching this skill requires more hands-on visual supports? This series aims to provide the SLP or small group teacher with visual supports to help your students develop their ability to provide similarities and differences with greater independence.

✅The research suggests: Seeing similarities and differences is a fundamental cognitive process (Gentner & Markman; Medin, Goldstone & Markman). Strategies that engage students in comparative thinking had the greatest effect on student achievement (Marzano, Pickering & Pollock).

⭐This BUNDLE set includes: ANIMALS, HOUSEHOLD, TRANSPORTATION, FOOD, & SCHOOL SUPPLIES. In each set, items are provided in pairs with interactive pieces for student placement within a Venn diagram. 2 differences for each item and 2 collective similarities are included. The describing features are meant to be relatively obvious for the students, as the goal is the skill of verbalizing similarities and differences independently. There are also pages for creating different pairings among the items. Please note: When comparing items that aren’t the original pairings, describing features were not necessarily included to fit these pairings. The SLP or small group teacher may need to help with selection and/or create additional images/visuals.

✂️Suggested Prep: Print page 7, laminate and cut into strips to use as visual cues for verbalizing similarities and differences after completing a hands-on Venn diagram. These visuals are constant across main categories, so if storing these packets together, only one set may be needed. You can also choose to print one for each set and/or each student in your group. For each set within the bundle, print the Venn diagram pages. Laminate each page. Place Velcro (smooth stays put) on each dot. Cut the bottom strip of describing features/items into pieces and place Velcro (rough side) on the back of each. Place these interactive pieces in the squares for student use when manipulating pieces into the Venn diagram. Once each page is prepped, you can punch 3-ring holes in each page and store in a binder or without holes in a mesh/clear zippered pouch. Print and laminate the flashcards for each. set within the bundle. Cut each card and use flashcards for more visual support or for a higher level similarities and differences activity (without interactive components).
