Description

Silly Stories: A Narrative Writing Activity

Do you have reluctant writers in your classroom? Or students that complain, "I don't know what to write about!" If so, try Silly Stories for narrative writing in your classroom.

Silly Stories can be used in small groups or as a writing center activity. It can also be used as a resource when students need ideas to start their stories.

Silly Stories developed from a game I played with my children and their friends. I have played this with kids of all ages, and they all enjoyed the activity.

How to Play

In groups of 4 – 5, students use the spinners to get a character, setting, and a random object. Students write narrative stories that include the elements picked with the spinner.

Every player begins their story, then passes it to the left after finishing one sentence. Each person writes a sentence, then passes it on.

Alternatively, teachers can set a timer and allow students to write for a certain amount of time, then pass the story to the next player. This option works well with older students.

Use Again and Again

The are four different spinners included for each category: character, setting, and object. These spinners can be mixed and matched for endless story starter combinations.

Low Prep Set Up

Simply print the spinners and cut them apart. Add paper, pencils, & paperclips and the activity is ready!

If the teachers plans to reuse the spinners, printing them on card stock and laminating them will make them more durable.

Printing the spinners on colored paper makes them “pop”!

Included in Resource

Silly Stories includes the directions for use, as well as a page of spinners for character, setting, and object. Each page has four different spinners.
