Whether you call them sight words, high frequency words or no excuse words, these 38 words are a combination of the Fry list and Dolch word list and represent a good portion of the first words we expect kindergarten and first grade students to read and spell. But how can we help them remember those spellings? (See the chart to see which words are included.) Children love to learn through music and music helps them remember things that simply must be memorized. This document includes lyrics of 38 songs for 38 of the most commonly seen words as well as alternate lyrics for several of the songs. The words are set to classic children’s tune (piggyback songs) so there is no need to learn additional tunes, only the new words. As kids learn these songs they learn to spell and read common sight words. Use these songs for direct instruction, during group writing, or as reminders when kids get stuck. You may also display the words using a PDF viewing program on a smart-board or use the songs as whole group poetry reading. In this document each song is alone on an 81/2 x 11 page ready to be made into a book, displayed or to be placed back-to back with the corresponding whole group sized flash card of the word, also on letter size paper. Each word is offered in a font similar to both Zaner-Bloser.
