This packet contains a visual-gestural-auditory pairing cue set to help students recognize and name short vowel sounds. Each short vowel is paired with its letter, ClipArt, and a gesture associated with the sound to help students recognize and remember the short vowel sounds and letters. A practice page is included for each short vowel sound. There are also two pages with mixed practice, and two pages for recognition of words with short vowel sounds (matching pictures to written words).

I have used the visual/gestural pairing with students with Apraxia of Speech, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, and students within Life Skills classrooms for the past ten years to help with short vowel matching and identification. I have found it very useful especially for my CAPD students to discriminate between short i and short e. Some of my fellow teachers have used the visual-auditory-gesture pairing system with their kindergarten and first grade classrooms with increased class-wide mastery of short vowel discrimination skills as well.

This product is primarily intended for students in grades K-1, but can be used in Speech and Language sessions, Learning Support classrooms, Life Skills classrooms, and Regular Education classrooms for any students who struggle with short vowel discrimination and identification. Worksheets can be used as whole class, small group, individual, or home practice.
