Description

The Suspenseful Short Story Unit supplements mystery stories, the horror genre, and provides scary stories to fright and delight your students! This short story unit focuses on identifying and analyzing the element of suspense. This pairs perfectly with Edgar Allan Poe!

How will this resource benefit your classroom? The activities reinforce the knowledge students need to analyze a story's suspenseful mood and setting.

The Suspenseful Stories Short Story Unit could additionally be utilized as a springboard activity when teaching your students the art of suspenseful writing!


The following writing techniques and methods used by authors to create suspense will be studied:

  • Inciting the Fear of the Unknown
  • Setting the Stage for a Suspenseful Setting
  • Introducing Conflicts that Cause Anxiety and Uncertainty
  • Pacing and Implementing Delays
  • Using Foreshadowing
  • Heightening Suspense Through the Use of Dramatic Irony.
