What educators are saying

A very cool resource! It works on developing decisions among pairs or teams. It causes students to take a side and really think through decisions. They get thrown curve balls and have to make new decisions. A fun twist on real life.
Even my not-so-engaged students were into this one, and participated in the discussion of who they'd choose, etc. It's a great intro to responsible decision making!

Description

A great way to get your kids thinking when it comes to decision making! This was inspired by Pasta On Sunday's Productions "Survivor Island Decision Making Activity," but I made it my own and added a few more elements because I'm extra like that, lol. This was a hit in my classroom and encouraged my students to think outside of the box while also listening to their peer's point of views!

This activity comes with:

  • A Google Slides PowerPoint
  • A PDF document with attached (and numbered) worksheets
  • **Preview shows only 4 out of the 10 slides. It also does not show the handouts (see thumbnail)

This activity encourages:

  • Consequence analysis
  • Decision making skills
  • Importance of information gathering
  • Communication skills
  • Debate skills

Directions for activity:

  1. Walk through the first few slides on the PowerPoint that describe what the "dilemma" is and challenge the students are now faced with
  2. Once you get to "the choices" slide, hand out the first sheet (which is the same information that is on the slide) so students are able to see the options up close
  3. Provide students 2 minutes to simply discuss with their partners
  4. Then, hand students the next sheet of paper, where they will write down their choices and describe their reasoning for each. You can start the timer by going to the next slide and pressing "play."
  5. After the 8 minutes is up, tell students that everyone has both their strong and their weak points, and you "accidentally" forgot to tell them each person's full story.
  6. Go to the next slide to show students even more information about each choice. This will provoke even more conversation where students may have to make certain changes to their original decision.
  7. Hand out the next paper that shows this exact information from step 6.
  8. Hand out the last piece of paper where students will make their final decisions and must describe why they made certain changes.
  9. Once students are finished, go to the last slide and have them discuss the 3 reflection questions. I usually like to have them "think-pair-share" for this.

I am positive that your students will love this activity! Have the best time!!!
