What educators are saying

Great resource! This is an engaging interactive digital activity that my students thoroughly! They loved it, and I loved that they were so actively engaged in our content!
My students loved this activity, it was hard for them to understand why you flipped the compass rose.

Description

Are you looking for interactive, engaging shadow length and position of the sun practice? This self-checking made for Google Slides shadows activity is just what you need. Quick and easy setup simply add the document to your online student management system.

Goal: Students will be able to predict patterns in shadows based on the way the Earth rotates causing the sun to appear to move across the sky.

This activity gives students tons of practice with reading a compass rose and knowing that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. They visualize the sun appearing to move in an arc across the sky from east to west.

Self-checking: students learn about the shadows and the position of the sun in the sky through detailed picture notes. Then, test their understanding with 15 self-checking tasks.  Students are provided pictures of objects making shadows in different directions, they then either choose where the sun would be in the sky or what time of day it may be.

This activity sends students directly to present mode, they click on correct answers and work their way through the slides. If they click on the incorrect answer they are sent back to the question to try again.  In the end, they are encouraged to try the adventure again if they struggled with the concept.

Printable recording sheet included to keep students focused on their studying

Bright eye-catching colors with great visuals. This is a great activity to have students do after teaching your lesson on shadows and how they change throughout the day.

2 different versions are included:

northern hemisphere version: for those living in the northern hemisphere. It can be a little confusing at first because the compass rose is pointed in a different direction than some students may be used to. We highly suggest using this version because it is scientifically accurate. In order to see the sun on the northern hemisphere you need to be facing south. It is also great compass rose reading practice for the students.

southern hemisphere version: for those living in the southern hemisphere or for those who are working with students who can’t visualize the compass rose pointing in the opposite direction.

Here's what you'll get in the Shadows Digital Activity

  • 2 versions of self-checking slide shows (57 slides)
  • 2 versions of recording sheets
  • Answer keys
  • Teaching notes
  • Teacher and Student directions

**The slideshows have also been newly updated to make clicking on answers easier for students. There should be fewer accidental next-page clicks. **

Your students will begin to feel confident in their knowledge of shadows changing length throughout the day. They'll feel independent as feedback is provided immediately.

This is a great activity for those days you need independent work or sub plans. Works great for absent students. This can be assigned to students to practice multiple times for review as well.

Great as an enrichment activity for younger students or state test prep.

Prep is quick and easy... Just print the recording sheets, post the link, and you're ready for an engaging review of shadows.
