Description

Teaching Greek and Latin word parts is crucial for students to gain better reading comprehension and writing ability. I have taught roots for close to a decade now and this book is the product of many years of tweaking and revising to produce a book that is user friendly to teachers and challenging to students. More importantly the lessons are successful in helping with student achievement.

This book is a systematic approach to teaching Greek and Latin Roots to middle and high school students. Within the 139 pages of the book you will find printable lessons, reviews and quizzes for students and answer keys for all student activities. I use this book for my college prep 9th graders. I am currently developing SET TWO, for college prep 10th graders. However, the level of difficulty of Set ONE is not beyond a middle school student. I've made it simple, rigorous and effective.

Students will memorize 10 roots per week (except for week one where they start slowly with only 5 roots). There are a total of 20 lessons that cover 20+ weeks of study. The book is designed to complete one lesson per week, but there is flexibility to take breaks when needed. Furthermore, the book is designed to continue study throughout the year. What this means is that once the 20 lessons are completed the lessons do not stop. When studying roots the success is all about practicing every day and repetition of exposure to the roots. This way by the end of the year students KNOW the roots and take that knowledge with them after they leave your class.

Each lesson contains a list of roots with their definitions, an exercise to complete and a quiz for the end of the week. Students are assigned a lesson every day: Monday night they complete flash cards, Tuesday night they complete the exercise handout given on Monday, Wednesday night they complete a "More Practice" activity and Thursday night they study for the test.

The lessons do not remain the same throughout the year so it remains interesting for the students (and teacher) and it gives the students the opportunity to learn different skills.

My intention when I created the book was to simply use it myself, but teachers started to "steal" it from me and they told me to package it up and sell it, so I am. I created it in a way that I needed in my classroom, but it is easily adaptable to work in other styles of teaching.

If you have any questions or comments don't hesitate to email me at: zrkrsmith@gmail.com Also, if you do purchase the book let me thank you in advance and please leave feedback through the TpT site or email me feedback. If there is any way I can make the book better for others (and me) I want to do that.

Thank you.
