Description

Daily Oral Language, or daily editing, provides students an opportunity each day to analyze sentences for errors. Used on a daily basis, students develop editing skills that teach punctuation, capitalization, and usage skills. The format of the program gives students the chance to develop and practice proofreading on a daily basis; therefore, students are more likely to maintain these skills over time.

This PowerPoint is accompanied by a PDF printable document and they are intended to be used together. The PowerPoint should be displayed on the Smart Board while the students are given a handout of the printable document. Students should use the “proofreader’s marks” to correct the sentences then re-write the sentences correctly on the lines provided. During share time, students can write in the “proofreader’s marks” with the smart Board pen and re-write the sentences correctly on the writing paper provided in the PowerPoint if time permits. If students cannot identify some of the mistakes, be sure to point them out as this is a great opportunity to introduce new skills.

Each lesson should require no more than five or ten minutes. If you find it takes your students too long to do two sentences, you can start out with one. Once your students become more familiar with the lesson they will get faster. You can then add the other sentence if you wish. It is important to do these lessons daily as continuous practice will reinforce skills better than if they are only done once in a while.
