This really left a lasting impact on my students and it was nice learning about a hero that doesn't get the recognition her deserved.
What a great way to bring purposeful thinking to an important holiday! It was enough of a challenge to keep kids interested, and the product was beautiful!

Description

⭐️⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This beautiful, poignant recounting of one of the thousands of stories from 9/11 brought the tragedy to life for my students. They really connected with the family and the recounting of their son's heroic actions that saved lives. It will keep 9/11 alive for my students - they will never forget, even though they weren't even born yet." - Angela

This Patriot Day lesson starts with a moving 13-minute video about a man named Welles Crowther and his last hours on September 11, 2001. While the video alone can yield a wealth of conversation, you will find a worksheet to give students a purpose for watching the video. In addition, there is a flipbook that explores the characteristics of a hero. Students will define a hero, discuss Welles Crowther, reflect upon themselves, relate to our society, complete a quote analysis, and share their final thoughts on our community.

Teacher feedback:

  • My students were enthralled. They were silent and absolutely encouraged to do good. One student now wears a red bandanna himself. Thank you.
  • This is a great resource. I look forward to incorporating it into my classroom. It is a piece of history that is close to my heart since I was living in NYC when this happened.
  • This video and activity have stayed with my students long after we viewed it on September 11th. They continue to talk about the heroism of Welles Crowther. This was a wonderful activity that I plan to use with future classes.
  • I was absent on 9/11, so I had my sub do this with my students. Students were engaged and were still talking about the activity when I came back to school!
  • This is a great resource to go with a great story! I love doing this on 9/11, it helps shed a little hope on a horrible day!
