What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource. It helped them understand their hearing loss and what they could do to help themselves.
Very good resource for my student. She was able to read it easily, only a few questions, and allowed for a better picture of her transition needs.

Description

Have a new student on your caseload and no idea what self-advocacy skills they have? The Self-Advocacy Screener is the answer! This screener will indicate each student's strengths and weakness in various self-advocacy topics.

This download has two parts:

1. Interactive PDF for Students: This contains the questions for the students. Interactive PDFs can be shown on an iPad or computer*, no Internet required! This allows you to reuse the screener with every student on your caseload easily!

2. Teacher Guide and Checklist: Teacher instructions, scoring sheet and checklist are included. As you work through the questions on the interactive PDF you can record the data on the checklist.

*The interactive PDF can be printed if you wish! I recommend printing 2 or 3 slides to a page to reduce paper.

Topics Covered:

  1. Own Hearing Loss
  2. Own Hearing Devices
  3. HAT System (FM/DM System)
  4. Identity
  5. Strategies in the Classroom
  6. Communication Breakdowns
  7. Accommodations
  8. Audiograms
  9. Transition

The screener is designed to be used with your entire caseload. Scores are based on K-2, 3-5, and secondary age ranges.

Student Self-Reflection: The screener also includes a space in each section for the student to reflect how comfortable/confident they feel about that topic.

This product does not replace self-advocacy checklists/assessments. Rather, it gives itinerant Teachers of the Deaf and SLPs an idea of where to start with self-advocacy skills. The screener will indicate "review" or "satisfactory." "Review" indicates the student needs some teaching or review of that topic. "Satisfactory" indicates the student has adequate skills for their age range.
