Description
34 Slide Google Slide Unit. No Prep. In the past my AP Spanish Literature students have struggled to engage with La Segunda Carta de Relación because of the length, eloquent formal language and the fact that it was written 500 years ago. This year I challenged myself to create a Segunda Carta 1 week Unit of reading the text that simplifies and modernizes the language and storyline without sacrificing the critical mastery of AP literary terms, concepts and analysis. This unit includes a multimedia guide to the Conquest, emphasizes who Hernán Cortés was and I am especially proud of the part of this lesson related to La Malinche. Students watch a 25 minute engaging narrative-documentary about her and my students really engaged with the time and what her experience might have been. The reading is done in break out rooms and broken up into 1-2 days where students re-write chunks of the letter into text messages without losing key information and main points. The students do the work to modernize the text and the template includes engaging visuals. I hope to complete Segunda Carta within one week assigning work from this unit synchronously and asynchronously. The complete Unit is 34 pages and students can complete all activities within the packet and turn it in on Google classroom at the end of the Unit. I started the historical background today and will do the reading activities beginning tomorrow! Here are the teacher notes for that 1-2 day reading/writing/synthesis assignment.
Teacher Notes:
Ask students what they think will be in the letter. Discuss potential motives and audience. Break the students up into small groups and assign each group a section (1-13) or do half one day and the second half of the letter the next day. Ask students to rewrite their section so that it is not a letter, but a text (modern and brief). The Teacher can monitor the break out rooms by sharing a copy of this unit with students and making them all editors. You can watch them do the work from the main room and everyone works collaboratively on the re-writing of la Segunda Carta. Ask them not to leave out key points. After completing this writing exercise, students return to the group and share their brief text with the class. At the end, the teach can compile all 13 “iphones” and create a collaborative summary.
