What educators are saying

The best part of this resource was that students were able to build the connection between "simple problems" and those with scientific notation. Highly recommend!
This was very helpful in giving my students strategies to help them work with problems they don't know how to solve!

Description

Help students tackle challenging word problems operating with numbers in scientific notation with these three activities. Students will add, subtract, multiply, and divide in these resources.

Word Problem Basics: Students use the strategy of replacing difficult numbers with simple ones to help them think about the operations.

Create the Question: Scenarios are provided, and students create their own questions that result in given solutions.

Complete the Story: Students fill in the blanks to complete a story and make it mathematically correct. (Two versions of this one are provided: with and without answer choices.)

Answers keys are included.

Use numbers expressed in the form of a single digit times an integer power of 10 to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other. For example, estimate the population of the United States as 3 × 10⁸ and the population of the world as 7 × 10⁹, and determine that the world population is more than 20 times larger.
Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.
