What educators are saying

My students loved this hands on lab. It was so simple to set up and I loved that there were multiple ways to use it and adapt to my classroom needs.
Thanks for creating this great resource. This resource really did help my students. Thanks again for creating it!

Description

Experiments with candy are always a big hit in the STEM Lab and a great way to introduce the process of science! The activity begins with an exploration using candy and then moves on to conducting two experiments that follows the scientific method with lab sheets to complete as students work.

This product includes worksheets that provide step by step instructions through the Scientific Method experiment process including the problem (question), hypothesis, procedure, data recording tables, graphing and data analysis and post-lab reflection and discussion questions. It is engaging and fun!

Includes:

  • Introductory inquiry activity: students will see that when an M&M is placed in water, the sugar and color coating dissolves and spreads out in a circular pattern around the M&M. When students compare their results, they will see that every color of M&M dissolves in a similar way. The way the sugar and color dissolve in water is a property of M&M’s. This activity gives students a place to start making observations, asking questions, identifying and controlling variables, and designing a valid experiment.
  • Experiment #1: How does water temperature affect dissolving rate of M&M's?
  • Experiment #2: How does the amount of sugar in a solution affect dissolving rate of M&M's.

Just bring the candy, some cups and heated water - the worksheets are ready to use!
