Description

This lesson is based on Orton Gillingham Multisensory Language Development principles.

Many students, whether struggling, or advanced, benefit from this multi-skill based development of science vocabulary words through a multisensory approach.

Page 3: Students should orally say and write the prefix (es) and meaning on the lines provided on the bottom of page 2.

Page 4: Student will orally read words with prefixes hydro- and hydr-. Students should take notes for each word, and draw pictures to support word meaning.

Page 5: Students preview the sentences by using a highlighter to identify the prefixes hydro- and hydr-. Then, students should orally read each sentence. Teachers/parents should ask student to summarize sentences to ensure comprehension.

Page 6: Student has another opportunity to develop word comprehension; students write sentences using 10 of the vocabulary terms in complete sentences. This activity helps students to become stronger as a writer, because they will need to elaborate with details in sentences to support vocabulary word. Teachers can, on a sentence level, determine student comprehension and sentence structure, syntax.

Page 7-8: Students are provided with a reading passage that includes many of the words highlighted in the word list (page 3). Students have another opportunity to understand each word's meaning, and to develop sentence and paragraph comprehension. A variety of questions are included at the end of the story.

Page 9: Once student has completed pages 3 - 8, they have an opportunity to research the scientific term hydrogen. While a scientific mind may understand without processing this term, many student fail to connect to its meaning.
Students have to complete a K-W-L chart, based on an assignment listed on the page. This requires student access additional information using credible websites on "hydrogen."

Page 10: Students are expected to write facts and/or pictures representative of facts learned from the research component.

As you will see, all of these activities, are designed for student development of science vocabulary, improved comprehension and writing development, along with research based reading strategies including: previewing, summarization, vocabulary development and active reading strategies development.

To summarize, skills developed with this lesson include:

Prefix meanings for hydro- and hydr- (when followed by a vowel)
Word recognition
Comprehension
Writing
Processing speed
Working Memory
Long term memory
Word Retrieval

Students develop a stronger word vocabulary through the use of a multisensory approach to word meaning using prefixes, roots and suffixes. After the student has completed the lesson over days, a stronger connection to the prefixes' meanings occurs. When this occurs, students are more automatic in reading fluency and comprehension.

This lesson places a great deal of focus on repetition, review, practice using multisensory strategies and techniques.

There will be more science prefix and root lessons. Each lesson is designed for use over a period of time, not to be completed in one day's time. If you would like to purchase a bundle of science roots then click on the following:

It is important for each student to have time to process the skills. Otherwise, students may be tempted to memorize the material, rather than comprehend.

Finally, it is my pleasure to provide provide my intellectual property which I have spent hours creating for students to learn; and for teachers not to have to "reinvent the wheel."
